Art Education Sequence: Art 201

STUDIO ASSIGNMENT

1E: analyzes and demonstrates the elements and principles of design.

Elements: line, shape, form, value, color, texture, and space

Principles: unity, rhythm, movement, emphasis, pattern, balance and contrast

Description: I  created three 16 by 20 inch compositions out of fabric. The forms represent hydrangeas, lilies, and aloe vera plants. This was my color theory final, so the emphasis was on color interaction.

Rationale: I created a color system for a limited color palette and used different versions of the palette for each piece. The values and intensities of the fabric vary to create a sense of space and dimension on the 2 dimensional plane. The patterns of the fabrics were mostly floral, which put an emphasis on the larger content. I often implement many aspects of the elements and principles of design, because they make the work more visually pleasing.

ANALYSIS OF ARTWORK

1F: analyzes and demonstrates how aesthetic qualities (e.g., elements, principles, and expressive ideas) are used in art works.
1G: analyzes and evaluates (critiques) artworks for how aesthetic qualities are used to convey intent, expressive ideas, and/or meaning.

Description: I am minoring in art history, which means that I write about and critique artwork often. The essay I provided as evidence is an analysis of Thomas Cole's Catskill Scenery.

Rationale: I discuss the aesthetic qualities of his painting including his technique, color pallet, composition, and subject matter as well as their implications.

STUDIO ARTWORK AND CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT WORK

4F: creates artwork that demonstrates the process of problem solving and creative exploration.

Description: I made 3 drawings from life at a large scale and then created abstract thumbnails of pieces of the large drawings. The final piece that I created was 12 in by 12 in and made of fabric on cardboard.

Rationale:  This is an example of my creative process: sketching ideas first, planning for a final piece by making thumbnails, and then studying the elements and principles of design to create a final piece.

CLINICAL OBSERVATION WRITTEN REFLECTION

7A: understands child development and the psychological principles of learning and how they apply to visual arts education.

Description: During Art 201 I participated in 10 hours of art clinical observations. I observed Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade. I also completed reflections for each and have included one of them as evidence.

Rationale: I know the Developmental Stages of child's art and got to experience them during these observations. I learned about age appropriateness and how to help these students improve their art skills. For example, I observed that the younger students needed more hands on learning to become more engaged in the subject matter and to understand the concepts more thoroughly.

PROFESSIONALISM, ADVOCACY & LEADERSHIP: PAL 1

7G: understands the need for continuing study, self-evaluation, and professional growth.

Description:  At University Galleries in Normal, Illinois we would have visiting artists hold lectures for the community. These lectures include background information about the artists life, work, and concepts that they deal with in their art.

Rationale: These lectures always open my mind to new ideas in my own work. This lecture by Wonsook Kim was especially rewarding because my work is so influenced by hers.

PROFESSIONALISM, ADVOCACY, & LEADERSHIP: PAL 2

7N: advances his or her knowledge of current developments in the field by participating in professional development activities (e.g., coursework, professional organizations, and workshops).

Description: I performed a live drawing for the 1857 Society. The 1857 Society is a group of philanthropists who have donated over $50,000 to Illinois State University. I was asked to perform this drawing for the new inductees at University Galleries in Normal, IL because one of the new inductees had given me a scholarship in the spring (Wonsook Kim). I started with a rough outline of what I was going to draw and then in the few hours that the guests where there I finished the piece.

Rationale: I developed my work further as well as my professionalism by performing and networking with people who care about the arts. It is important to me to stay invested in my own work to keep my passion alive and to share that with students.
